Editor Review:

“The history of this photograph explains that this adult bald eagle had been shot and now resides at an educational facility in North Carolina. For those unable to travel to locations where these magnificent birds are more frequently found, this opportunity to photograph an eagle is one worth taking. As a rule, Nature’s Best Photography does not usually feature captive animals, other than our Zoo category in the Awards competition. However, because this one is unable to survive in the wild and is being displayed to educate people about bald eagle biology, we felt it was appropriate to run it.

This particular shot offers lots of feather detail which is sometimes missed in the wild. I like the background color and the position of the bird with the bill nearly completing a perfect circle as it almost touches the white feathers at the base of the head plumage. It’s even hard to tell that the eagle is missing a wing. Nicely done, Ken. I hope you use this image to speak to the importance of protecting these amazing birds” — Steve Freligh
