- Notes From the Field: “I took this image from a blind on Machais Seal Island off the coast of Maine. My husband and I planned our trip to Maine around going out to see the puffins that breed and live on Machais Seal Island. The island is overseen by the Canadian Fish and Wildlife Service (despite being part of the U.S.) and they are very strict about the number of people that can visit the island, where they can go and for how long. We were among a group of 15 that were allowed to spend 1 hour in one of 4 blinds on the Island. There were Puffins and Razorbills taking off and landing all around our blind and I was able to capture this shot just after these 4 Puffins landed. Taken with a Canon 5D MII, Canon 100-400L f/4.5-5.6 lens.”— Hali Sowle
Editor’s Review:
“We are used to seeing great shots of puffins in flight. This perspective is very different, yet compelling in its design. All the puffins are facing different directions and I enjoy each separate profile. It is intriguing to view the brightly colored bills in contrast with the view of the puffin from the back of the head. Wonderful composition.”— Steve Freligh
