  • Notes From the Field: “Ruby-throated hummingbird hovering at sunrise with paper thin wings. This image seems to capture the thinness of the wings well. It got me thinking about how they are very tough little creatures that migrate down the east coast of the United States and then across the Gulf of Mexico! The wings may be thin but they are not fragile. It also got me thinking about the millions of gallons of nectar that the plants produce for them in order to get their genetic diversity taken care of. So that is the role they fill in the overall scheme of things: they help spread genetic diversity. So what role do we play? Well even though we have forward facing eye sockets, many primates do so perhaps we were not predators. Perhaps we were scavengers and periodically served as prey for the big predators like the big cats. Hmmm…. if that is the case I wish I was a hummingbird!” — Edward Mistarka

Editor’s Review:

“Sometimes flash works, sometimes not. In this case it helps freeze the action of this beautiful hummingbird against a magnificent sunrise. I like everything about it, especially the sharpness of focus, giving detail to the feathers and eye. Nice job!” — Steve Freligh
