2011 Windland Smith Rice Awards Event at the Smithsonian

On May 3rd, it was a night to remember at the National Museum of Natural History. Award winners from around the globe attended this prestigious event to receive recognition for their extraordinary talent in nature photography and their dedication to documenting the natural world. It was an evening full of celebration as Nature’s Best Photographers viewed their images on exhibition. Made possible by Presenting Sponsor, GEICO, and the support of Category Sponsors; African Wildlife Foundation, Brooke Morrow, The Drogin and Lee families, and anonymous donors, this event brought publishers, photographers, scientists, and outdoor enthusiasts together as one united team to celebrate the beauty of nature through the art of photography. More pictures to come.

  • Notes From the Field: “We went to Antarctica for the icebergs, and we found them. Wind and water sculpted — blue, green, even slightly pink.”— D’Arcy Guerin

Editor’s Review:

“Icebergs offer so many photographic opportunities in shape, color, and texture. In this image I am first drawn the area of less color and more definition. I particularly like the hole going through the ice that is rimmed with catchlight from the sun. The overall composition brings drama to the layers of blue in the iceberg.”— Steve Freligh

  • Notes From the Field: “The eagle was perched next to her nest which was built on top of an outcrop of basalt rock located in Katmai National Park. While at the park to photograph coastal brown bears, our guide took us by this nesting eagle. The weather was cloudy with occasional light rain. The picture is hand held from a skiff, iso 800 at f/8.”— Christine Haines

Editor’s Review:

“In my former life I used to locate and monitor bald eagle nesting sites so I’m naturally drawn to this image on a personal level. As a publisher, I enjoy seeing this majestic symbol stand out from the deep colored canvas provided by the overcast sky. The soft color highlights of the flowers, grasses, and rock make this an exceptional composition as well. Nicely done, Christine!” — Steve Freligh

  • Notes From the Field: “Eastern Ribbon Snake & Hyla tree frog in a battle… as expected, the snake finally won. Taken on the north shore of Lake Apopka, Florida.” — Lou Guillette

Editor’s Review:

“At first glance I wasn’t sure which animal was in control of the engagement, but I quickly became consumed (no pun intended) by the overall composition of the image. Its graceful and inviting colors and shapes drew me into the unfolding drama as I began to pick sides in favor of the tree frog. But it’s all part of nature’s balance so thumbs up for the snake as well as it follows its predatory role. The eyes of both creatures are full of intensity as they nearly line up across the frame. The circular piece of vegetation also brings a wonderful design element to the photo that makes it a great addition to this ongoing Flickr gallery.” — Steve Freligh
